Is it worth sacrificing a few seconds of your life to buy another watch? You can afford a tourbillon watch!

You've probably heard of the "tourbillon," right? Not the song, though that one's meaningful and beautiful! But what exactly is a "tourbillon" on a watch? Is it expensive? The pinnacle of watchmaking? Why are tourbillons so costly?

A tourbillon is a device designed to counteract the effects of gravity on a watch's timekeeping.

Tourbillon is French for "whirlwind." It represents the pinnacle of complex craftsmanship in the world of watchmaking. What exactly is a tourbillon? To understand that, we need to go back over 200 years to the era of pocket watches. Have you seen Fullmetal Alchemist? Edward's silver pocket watch is a product of that time. The standard of "accuracy" for watches back then was incomparable to today's; an error of several minutes or even tens of minutes a day was common. Before the Industrial Revolution, everything was handcrafted, and being able to produce a smoothly functioning watch was already quite an achievement. However, watchmakers naturally sought ways to improve accuracy, crafting more precise hairsprings and gears. On the other hand, since pocket watches at that time were kept in waistcoat pockets, remaining in a vertical position for extended periods, the timekeeping mechanism of the mechanical movement—the escapement structure (including the balance wheel, hairspring, lever, and escape wheel)—would be affected by gravity. This would cause the movement to run fast or slow, leading to errors. To solve this problem, in 1795, Abraham-Louis Breguet invented the tourbillon device. The timekeeping mechanism is mounted on a 360-degree rotating carriage, and the entire timekeeping system rotates once per minute, ensuring that the timekeeping mechanism is no longer subjected to gravity from a single direction. This results in more stable timekeeping and, naturally, greater accuracy.

What makes a tourbillon worth hundreds of thousands?

As time progressed, pocket watches evolved into wristwatches. Wristwatches are no longer affected by prolonged vertical placement. Furthermore, modern watchmaking technology is quite mature, so the tourbillon device's relevance to "accuracy" is not as significant as it once was. However, tourbillon devices are still used in wristwatches. Due to their complex structure, watch manufacturers view the tourbillon as a stage to showcase their capabilities. Building a tourbillon requires at least hundreds of parts, and its precision and complexity are so high that it cannot be achieved by ordinary watchmakers. Additionally, modern tourbillons have added functions beyond the basic tourbillon, such as flying tourbillons, double-axis tourbillons, and spherical tourbillons. Therefore, they must be crafted by experienced watchmakers, with each component hand-decorated and meticulously polished. Naturally, tourbillons command a hefty price tag.

In addition to the basic tourbillon, Watchmake Factory's tourbillon movements also feature moon phase and GMT functions, increasing both the practicality and aesthetic appeal of the watch. >View Tourbillon Designs

This year marks the 220th anniversary of the tourbillon. On June 26, 1801, Abraham-Louis Breguet was granted a ten-year patent by an official institution for a new regulating device, named Tourbillon. Accurate timekeeping was crucial for astronomy, science, and navigation at the time, making the invention of the tourbillon profoundly significant for the development of human science.
